VueScan Newsletter - April 2024

Hello and Welcome!

At the risk of sounding old, it always amazes us how fast time goes. Here in the northern hemisphere, there are definite signs of Spring in the air – which always makes us feel better as new life appears and our days get longer. But wherever you are in the world, we hope that you are enjoying the season that you are in.

Anyway – back to business!

Firstly, thank you very much for responding to our request for details on your scanning projects. Many of you have been in contact with us and it has been fascinating to learn about your work. We will feature these over the next few months here – so look out for these.

If you would still like to tell us about your projects so we can share them with other users – please do so! And, as always, thank you so much for your comments and suggestions on how we can continually improve VueScan.

If you’ve had a positive experience with VueScan, we would be very grateful if you could take a moment to share your thoughts by leaving a review on Trustpilot, Facebook or another review site. Your feedback not only helps others discover VueScan, but also allows us to continuously improve our product. Thank you for your support! (And thank you for telling your friends and colleagues about us.)

Remember you can contact us for technical support (we need a Problem Report) and any general enquiries, suggestions, or feedback here

Every submission is read and answered by Ed and David themselves. One reason we think VueScan is so good is because of 25 years of customer suggestions and bug reports – and our in-boxes of problem reports is often down to only 2 or 3 problems.

Thank you for being part of the VueScan community and we look forward to hearing from you.

Beverley.

Q & A

Ed Hamrick and David Hamrick (VueScan developers) receive all technical enquiries and answer your questions directly.

Q) Something is messed up in VueScan. Either the colors are strange or it’s not writing files I think it should. What should I do?

A) Try using the File | Default options command. This resets all options to their default values and often solves problems with accidental options settings. To do this, click on the word ‘File’ in the menu bar of VueScan then click on the words ‘Default options’ in the list that drops down under the word ‘File’. Then change only one option at a time between scans. This will often diagnose what options settings are the problem.

Q) I have a scanner that’s supported by VueScan that uses WiFi to connect to VueScan. However, VueScan can’t find it. What should I do?

A) First, make sure you aren’t using a Virtual Private Network (VPN), either on your computer or in a router. A VPN will interfere with finding scanners on the network. If VueScan still can’t find your scanner, set Prefs | Network scanners to either eSCL or Manual. If using “eSCL”, set the IP address and experiment with both UDP port 80 and 8080. If using “Manual”, look up the USB Vendor ID and USB Product ID in the supported scanners list and put this info and the IP address into the fields below this. The USB Vendor ID and USB Product ID tell VueScan what kind of scanner is connected at this IP address.

Q) What other interesting things are you and David working on?

A) David is the wizard of machine learning, and he’s continually training them with more data and doing more powerful things with neural networks. David is also going to add support for more scanners on macOS by adding support for scanners that work with Image Capture (and not with VueScan). I hope to work on adding improved OCR support by integrating Tesseract 5.0, along with being the main bug-stomper, which I enjoy.

Customer Projects

A big thank you to Steve for sending this in. Steve publishes The Digitizing Report and has just written a feature about slides and negatives.

Hi!

Saw your call in a recent newsletter for comments on how folks use VueScan - thought you might enjoy this.

“My first stop in what turned out to be an unexpectedly deep dive was just scanning with my existing tools; with any flatbed that has slide backlight, one can do a pretty decent job. Quick shout-out to Ed Hamrick of VueScan - he has single-handedly rescued millions of perfectly good scanners from dumps and thrift-shop shelves, bringing them back to life after computer and scanner manufacturers abandoned them. I first discovered it a decade ago when Apple killed TWAIN, and have never looked back. If you scan, just get it… very worth the $50 or $120 depending on which version fits your needs!”

The whole piece, with a few other mentions, is here:

Just wanted to thank you for keeping this old CanoScan 8800F useful, and I also sometimes run my Microtek ScanMaker i900 (firewire). I also use VueScan to run the Plustek 8200i slide scanner.

A recent twist involved a few hundred 2-1/4 glass-mount Ektachrome slides from the fifties. They were varying degrees of deep red due to that dreadful E2 process. I found that your automatic fading tool works very well with a wide range of these, and it has been a part of the workflow. I prefer to keep the primary image RAW, so after using VueScan to fix it I can’t dig into the extremes of the curve as well, but it just amazes me how well it just knows… and is often the best solution. The image at the end of the story linked above was done entirely in VueScan, and shows the condition of the original slide (1959 E2).

Cheers! Steve

Customer Comment

We read and receive many kind comments from our customers, and we appreciate it very much. We reply to all your emails so please continue to send them in.

Hello Ed and David H

Thank you for this scanner app. It is rare I would praise something as mundane as a scanner app BUT flipping HP had NO solution for the Easy Scan just stopping on me. I was told technology is being upgraded all the time regardless of the version that was compatible with my old MacBook. There in nothing wrong with my old faithful Mac so why should I ‘upgrade’?

I also told the techie that I found your download and was told ‘oh good, you found a solution’! But I have your product and how is it that your VueScan is so easy and connected to the HP printer immediately! Sorry to rant but at least I managed to refrain from some Anglo Saxon expletives…

That’s all - just thank you so much for this. I am a volunteer Advocate and I rely on a scanner for evidential documents which need to be submitted so it’s a lifeline.

Okay, enough blah blah!

Kind regards
Helen

I’ve been using VueScan for well over 15 years now and as an imaging professional I can tell you it is second to none. The developers not only are skilled coders but they get the what imaging pros need. Not an old scanning guru? No problem, I often run VueScan in its more automated mode when I’m trying to capture a bunch of old photos and don’t want to spend as much time per image just to capture them.

There are some pieces of software out there that are so well done that they become part of the fabric of the part of the industry in which they reside. VueScan is exactly that.

I can’t believe how good their scanner software is! It’s OUTSTANDING! It works FLAWLESSLY. It’s updated constantly. Their customer support is INCREDIBLE! I didn’t want to junk my Canon 9950F Scanner because it scans film, negatives, slides, print material, photos. Thanks to VueScan software my Canon 9950 F is still working like the day I bought it. In fact, it can now do more than Canon’s original driver because of improvements built into VueScan’s software via their updates. If you have an old scanner with no new driver software, get VueScan!
