Frequently Asked Questions

Q) What is the easiest way to scan photos or receipts with a flatbed scanner?

A) Many scanner programs scan the whole area of the glass, regardless of what you’re scanning. Often, a photo or a receipt is much smaller than the glass, and you waste a lot of time waiting for the whole glass area to be scanned. VueScan will now detect when you’re only scanning a smaller area if you set ‘Input | Media size’ to ‘Auto’. This can save you a lot of time.

Q) My photos or receipts come out crooked when I scan them on a flatbed. How can I solve this?

A) Put the photo or receipt up against the top edge of the scanner. This will make it straight and will also be faster when ‘Input | Media size’ is set to ‘Auto’.

Q) I want to scan papers or receipts in black and white, and I want the smallest possible PDF files. How can I do this?

A) Normally, VueScan will do this automatically if ‘Input | Media’ is set to ‘Auto’, but you can also set ‘Input | Media’ to ‘B/W text’.

Q) I want to scan documents that have some color, but I also want the PDF files to be as small as possible. How can I do this?

A) Normally, VueScan will do this automatically if ‘Input | Media’ is set to ‘Auto’, but you can also set ‘Input | Media’ to ‘Color text’.

Q) Sometimes I’m scanning something with a bit of color, but it comes out as black and white or gray. How can I solve this?

A) Normally, VueScan detects scans with a bit of color, but you can also set ‘Input | Media’ to ‘Color’.

Q) Sometimes I scan a picture from a magazine, newspaper or book, and it comes out with a crosshatched pattern. How can I make this look better?

A) Set ‘Filter | Descreen’. You might also experiment with ‘Filter | Descreen dpi’.

Q) I’m scanning lots of pages with a document feeder and I’d like it to go faster. How can I do this?

A) It depends on the scanner, but sometimes you can scan faster by setting ‘Input | Media’ to “B/W text” or “Gray”.

Q) How can I make VueScan start up faster?

A) Set ‘Prefs | Disable scanners’ to ‘Network scanners’ (assuming you don’t have a network scanner).

Customer Comment

As always, thank you so much for your many emails – we always like to hear from our customers. Here are a few of them – unedited!

Ed -

When I first bought VueScan several (Many?) years ago it was to keep a not very old and not much used Canon scanner from the scrapheap dictated by a Windows "upgrade". Since then I have used VueScan intermittently and mostly successfully, only needing help occasionally. Support and advice has always been given promptly and with no reference to my dismal technical abilities.

Recently I started using VueScan with a different PC and scanner in a different country and, once again, had my false starts speedily corrected. What's more I have realised that VueScan's capabilities go way deeper than just allowing me to use an old scanner - It's all I need to scan and manage documents and pictures.

Thanks.

Ian, UK.

Thank you. I have used this software for a number of years and have been very satisfied. I am fully aware that you are actively involved in improving the product. That is reassuring and commendable.

I am grateful for the tool that you provide. I am a retiree who frequently scans photographs, and historical documents and sometimes whatever article that I want to save.

Jerry, Minneapolis, MN, USA.
