Hamrick Software Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Problems --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: VuePrint isn't behaving the way it used to. What should I do? A: Try setting all the options to their default values by pressing F7 followed by F5. --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: Some image files that I download using AOL can't be read by VuePrint. How do I fix this? A: These are probably files in an AOL-proprietary image format called .ART. You can convert an .ART file to a .BMP or .JPG file by running the AOL software, using File|Open... to load this file, and File|Save as... to save as .JPG or .BMP. You can make the AOL software download normal .GIF and .JPG files by turning on the following AOL option: My AOL|Preferences|WWW|Uncompressed Graphics --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: VuePrint doesn't start when I double-click on an image file in Windows. How do I fix this? A: Run VuePrint from the Accessories folder and choose the "Utilities|Configure extensions" command. This will re-set the file associations. If you're manually setting up the file associations, make sure you put "%1" at the end of the line _including_ the double-quotes. Most problems with file associations are due to people forgetting to add the double quotes, since without them, a file name with embedded spaces looks like two file names. --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: I can't play some types of sound or movie files. What should I do? A: You might check to see if the "Media Player" in the Accessories folder works. If not, then you'll need to install an MCI Driver or AVI decompressor for this type of movie file. You can find links to MCI Drivers and decompressors on: http://www.hamrick.com/arc.html When you get Microsoft's "Media Player" to work with movie files, then you've installed the MCI Driver and decompressors correctly and VuePrint should then work. If you're having problems playing .mov files using the Pro/32 Edition, try editing win.ini in your windows directory. Go to the section that begins with: [MCICompatibility] and delete the line: QTWVideo=0x0001 You might also check to see if you've installed the 16-bit version of QuickTime. There have been a number of reports that the MCI driver in the 32-bit version doesn't work. If you're using Windows 95 or Windows 98, one last thing to check is to use a text editor to look at c:\windows\system.ini. In the section that begins with [mci] you should have two lines that look like: AVIVideo=mciavi.drv MPEGVideo=mciqtz.drv These lines are sometimes messed up, often when upgrading to Windows 98, and sometimes need to be added back manually. --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: How can I re-size an image to make it smaller or larger? A: Make sure you're using VuePrint 7.7, then use the "File|Resize..." command followed by the "File|Save as..." command. If you're using an older version of VuePrint: 1) Set the width you want with "Options|Output|Output width..." 2) Set the height you want with "Options|Output|Output height..." 3) Save the image with "File|Save as..." --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: I'm loading large images and it takes too long. Is there a way to speed this up? A: You can load large images faster by choosing the "Options|Input|Quick look" option. You can also toggle this option on and off using the "Q" key. This is especially useful when loading large JPEG or TIFF images. --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: Previous versions of VuePrint displayed the percent completion of image loading in the window caption. How can I get the latest version to do this? A: Edit the .ini file - c:\windows\vuepro32.ini for the Pro/32 Edition and c:\windows\vueprint.ini for the 16-bit Edition. Add the line: EnableWindowPercent=1 --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: I get a General Protection Fault (GPF) when I run VuePrint. What should I do? A: Hamrick Software strives to fix all reported bugs in VuePrint, and is always interested in getting detailed problem descriptions. There are often a number of things that can be done in the near-term to work around problems: 1) Try pressing F7 followed by F5 to set all the VuePrint options to their default values. You can also delete the .ini file to accomplish this (the .ini file is usually c:\windows\vueprint.ini for the 16-bit Edition and c:\windows\vuepro32.ini for the Pro/32 Edition). 2) There are occasionally problems with some display drivers that can be solved by changing the number of colors on the display. You can do this in Windows 95/98/NT by clicking on the desktop with the right mouse button, choosing "Properties", clicking on the "Settings" tab, and then changing the "Color Palette" setting. 3) If none of the above fixes the problem, please send a description of the problem by e-mail to support@hamrick.com. Please include: 1) Version of Windows (3.1, 3.11, Windows 95/98/NT) 2) Version of VuePrint 3) Edition of VuePrint (16-bit or Pro/32) 4) Language of VuePrint (English, German, etc.) 5) Step by step description of how to reproduce the problem - keystroke by keystroke, mouse click by mouse click. 6) If a specific image or file is needed to reproduce the problem, please attach it to the e-mail. It's often helpful to zip the file before e-mailing it, and sending the smallest file available that can be used to reproduce the problem. --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: I received a serial number, but it doesn't seem to work. What should I do? A: There are several possible causes for this problem: 1) Double-check the date on your computer. It's surprisingly common that the date is in error, i.e. 2098 instead of 1998, or 1980 instead of 1998. You can check the date by using the Date/Time icon in the Control Panel. 2) Make sure you're running the latest version of VuePrint. 3) Make sure that your registration database isn't corrupted. You can do this by running c:\windows\regedit.exe. If it reports an error, then contact Microsoft about how to get this repaired. 4) If you're running Windows NT, make sure you're installing VuePrint from the Administrator account. --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: I downloaded VuePrint and tried it out, but I don't want to register it at this time. How do I remove it from my system? A: VuePrint is designed to completely remove itself, and to put things back the way they were before it was installed. To remove VuePrint: 1) Run VuePrint 2) "Utilities|Remove VuePrint" (restores file associations) 3) "Utilities|Remove screen saver" (if you set one up) 4) Exit VuePrint 5) Delete c:\windows\vue*.* If you deleted VuePrint before performing step 2 to restore the file associations, just download and install VuePrint again and then use the above procedure to remove it. --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: How can I install VuePrint in a different directory? A: Move the files that were installed (i.e. vuepro32.exe, vuepro32.hlp, and vuepro32.ini) to a different directory. Run the .exe file, and choose "Utilities|Install VuePrint". This will set up the icon and the file associations for this new directory. --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: I can't figure out how to decode files I get from Internet newsgroups. What should I do? A: You can get more information about how to use the uuencoding feature of VuePrint by: 1) Run VuePrint 2) Press F1 3) Choose "Internet Graphics" Make sure you're using the "File|Decode..." command to convert the .uue files to .gif or .jpg. Then use the "File|Open..." command to display the .gif or .jpg files. A common problem people have is the way they name the files for multi-part graphics. Put the first part of the file into file.uu1, the second part in file.uu2, etc. Then use "File|Open..." or "File|Decode..." on file.uu1, and the remaining pieces will be read automatically. --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: I want to sort through files and move them to different directories, but it's cumbersome to have to type in the directory name for each file. Is there an easier way? A: Just type in the name of the directory, i.e. c:\dirname, without the trailing backslash (\). You can also choose from the drop-down list of directory names if you work with many different directories. The last directory you moved or copied a file to will be the default. --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: I'm having problems printing using the Pro/32 Edition. I either get multiple copies printed, black/white printing on a color printer, or it won't print at all. A: Double-check the web site of the vendor of your printer to see if they have an updated printer driver for your printer. --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: How can I tell if the serial number has been accepted, and if VuePrint is successfully registered? A: If the Help|About... box doesn't display every time you run VuePrint, then your software is registered. If you haven't registered yet, you can display the number of days remaining on your trial period by running VuePrint and pressing the "A" key. --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: How do I tell what version or edition of VuePrint I have? A: Run VuePrint and choose "Help|About..." --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: How can I get a copy of the screen or a window into VuePrint? A: Press "Print Screen" to copy the whole screen to the clipboard, and "Alt-Print Screen" to copy the active window. Then use VuePrint's "Edit|Paste image" command to copy from the clipboard into VuePrint, and "File|Save as..." to save this image into a file. --------------------------------------------------------------- Q: I tried installing VuePrint, but I got an error message saying something about not having enough memory to run. I've got lots of free memory - what's wrong? A: This error message from Windows is misleading. It usually means that vuepro.exe was corrupted while being downloaded. This sometimes happens when systems are really busy, or if you transfer data using FTP without specifying BINARY mode. You'll probably need to download VuePrint again.
